Important Days are a must to remember for Banking, Insurance and SSC exams. These important days are asked in the general awareness section of almost all competitive examination and their knowledge can be also very useful for preparing for interviews. Here we provide you with a list of all Important Days that you must Remember of this month-August. 6th August - Hiroshima Day
On August 6, 1945 the US dropped an atomic bomb ("Little Boy") on Hiroshima in Japan.

9th August - Quit India Movement Day and Nagasaki Day
On 8 August 1942 at the All-India Congress Committee session in Bombay, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi launched the 'Quit India' movement. The next day, Gandhi, Nehru and many other leaders of the Indian National Congress were arrested by the British Government.

Three days later to Hiroshima bombing, on 9th August 1945 a second atomic bomb ("Fat Man") was dropped on the city of Nagasaki.

10th August - World Bio-Fuel Day
Every year 10th August is observed as World Bio-Fuel Day in a bid to create awareness about non fossil-fuels (Green Fuels). On this day in 1893, Sir Rudalph Diesel (inventor of the diesel engine) for the first time successfully ran mechanical engine with Peanut Oil. His research experiment had predicted that vegetable oil is going to replace the fossil fuels in the next century to fuel different mechanical engines. Thus to mark this extraordinary achievement, World Biofuel Day is observed every year on 10th August.

12th August - International Youth Day
International Youth Day 2017 is dedicated to celebrating young people’s contributions to conflict prevention and transformation as well as inclusion, social justice, and sustainable peace.

14th August - Pakistan's Independence Day
Pakistan's Independence Day is observed annually on 14 August, following its first observance on that day in 1947 (the day before the partition of India officially took effect).Pakistan came into existence as a result of the Pakistan Movement which aimed for the creation of a separate Muslim state by the partition of the north-western and north-eastern regions of undivided India.

15th August - Indian Independence Day
Independence Day is annually observed on 15 August as a national holiday in India commemorating the nation's independence from the British Empire on 15 August 1947. India attained independence following an Independence Movement noted for largely nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience led by the Indian National Congress (INC). Independence coincided with the partition of India, in which the British Indian Empire was divided along religious lines into the Dominions of India and Pakistan.

18th August - International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples
Indigenous peoples are inheritors and practitioners of unique cultures and ways of relating to people and the environment. They have retained social, cultural, economic and political characteristics that are distinct from those of the dominant societies in which they live. The theme for the day in 2017 is '10th Anniversary of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples'.

19th August - World Humanitarian Day and World Photography Day
Every day, humanitarian aid workers stand on the front lines of war and disaster, braving tremendous dangers and difficulties to deliver assistance to those who need it most. World Humanitarian Day (WHD), which takes place every year on 19 August, recognizes the aid workers who risk their lives in humanitarian service and mobilizes people to advocate for humanitarian action. The day was designated by the General Assembly to coincide with the anniversary of the 2003 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq.

August 19 is also observed as World Photography Day, which aims to inspire photographers across the planet to share a single photo with a simple purpose: to share their world with the world. 

20th August - Sadbhavna Divas
Sadbhavana Diwas is celebrated on the 20th of August every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of the erstwhile Prime Minister of India, Shri Rajiv Gandhi. Rajiv Gandhi was the grandson of the first Prime Minister of India, Shri Jawaharlal Nehru and son of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Rajiv Gandhi assumed the office of the Prime Minister upon the assassination of his mother,  and was the sixth Prime Minister of India serving from a period between 1984- 1989. Rajiv Gandhi held the honour of being the youngest Prime Minister at an age of 40.

23rd August - International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and Its Abolition

The night of 22 to 23 August 1791, in Santo Domingo (today Haiti and the Dominican Republic) saw the beginning of the uprising that would play a crucial role in the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade. International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition is intended to inscribe the tragedy of the slave trade in the memory of all peoples. 

29th August - National Sports Day and International Day Against Nuclear Tests

National Sports is celebrated throughout India on August 29. This celebration of this day marks the tribute to the legendary hockey players of India. The day also involves the celebration of hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand.

On 2 December 2009, the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly declared 29 August the International Day against Nuclear Tests. The resolution calls for increasing awareness and education “about the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions and the need for their cessation as one of the means of achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.” The resolution was initiated by the Republic of Kazakhstan, together with a large number of sponsors and cosponsors with a view to commemorate the closure of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test site on 29 August 1991.

The World Bank is like a cooperative, made up of 189 member countries. These member countries, or shareholders, are represented by a Board of Governors, who are the ultimate policymakers at the World Bank. Generally, the governors are member countries' ministers of finance or ministers of development. They meet once a year at the Annual Meetings of the Boards of Governors of the World Bank Group and theInternational Monetary Fund.

The governors delegate specific duties to 25 Executive Directors, who work on-site at the Bank. The five largest shareholders appoint an executive director, while other member countries are represented by elected executive directors.

World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim chairs meetings of the Boards of Directors and is responsible for overall management of the Bank. The President is selected by the Board of Executive Directors for a five-year, renewable term.

The Executive Directors make up the Boards of Directors of the World Bank. They normally meet at least twice a week to oversee the Bank's business, including approval of loans and guarantees, new policies, the administrative budget, country assistance strategies and borrowing and financial decisions.

The World Bank operates day-to-day under the leadership and direction of the president, management and senior staff, and the vice presidents in charge of Global Practices, Cross-Cutting Solutions Areas, regions, and functions. Established in 1944, the World Bank Group is headquartered in Washington, DC, USA. Tiny South Pacific island nation Nauru has become the 189th member of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

The World Bank Group consists of five organizations:

1. The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development
The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) lends to governments of middle-income and creditworthy low-income countries.

2. The International Development Association
The International Development Association (IDA) provides interest-free loans — called credits — and grants to governments of the poorest countries.

3. The International Finance Corporation
The International Finance Corporation (IFC) is the largest global development institution focused exclusively on the private sector. We help developing countries achieve sustainable growth by financing investment, mobilizing capital in international financial markets, and providing advisory services to businesses and governments.

4. The Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency
The Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) was created in 1988 to promote foreign direct investment into developing countries to support economic growth, reduce poverty, and improve people’s lives. MIGA fulfils this mandate by offering political risk insurance (guarantees) to investors and lenders.

5. The International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes
The International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) provides international facilities for conciliation and arbitration of investment disputes.

World Bank in the News-

1. World Bank allowed India to construct hydroelectric power facilities on tributaries of the Jhelum and Chenab rivers with certain restrictions under the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty (IWT).

2. An agreement for IBRD Credit of USD 35 Million from World Bank for “Assam State Public Financial Institutional Reforms Project” was signed in New Delhi. 

3. The World Bank has cleared a USD 250-million loan for making Indian youth more employable through re-skilling, in a move that is seen to aid the Skill India Mission.

4. According to India Development Report released by World Bank,  India had one of the lowest female participation in the workforce, ranking 120th among 131 countries.

5. State Bank of India and the World Bank announced that they had financed 100 MW of rooftop solar projects worth Rs400 crore in India. 

6. The World Bank has approved financing worth more than 500 million dollars for Afghanistan to support a string of projects to boost the economy, help improve service delivery in five cities and support Afghan refugees sent back from Pakistan.

7. World Bank has projected a strong 7.2 per cent growth rate for India this year (2017) against 6.8 per cent growth in 2016.

i. The 51st International Literacy Day is being celebrated on 8th September at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. The theme announced by UNESCO is `Literacy in a digital world.
ii. On this day, in the year 1965, the World Congress of Ministers of Education met in Tehran for the first time to discuss the program of education at the international level.  The UNESCO in its 14th Session in November 1966, declared 8th September as the International Literacy Day.

    ii. Kashyap had assumed the role of President and Co-founder after MakeMyTrip acquired Ibibo Group in October 2016. Kashyap was earlier designated as the Chief Executive Officer of the Ibibo Group.

    As compared to the IBPS Clerk previous year pattern, an overall increase of 25 minutes is introduced in the IBPS Clerk exam this year.

    2. Computer Clubbed with Reasoning

    Computer Knowledge is clubbed with reasoning ability section. Earlier computer knowledge section comprised 40  number of questions, the time allotted was 20 minutes for 20 marks.
    According to the changes brought, now as computer knowledge is clubbed with Reasoning Ability, this section carries 50 Questions of  60 Marks in 45 minutes.

    3. Increase in the number of questions of Quant & GA.


    Quantitative aptitude section and general awareness section has seen a significant increase in the number of questions and time allotted. Previous year Quantitative Aptitude section comprised 40 Questions and General Awareness (with special reference to Banking) 40 Questions. This year Quantitative Aptitude section and General/ Financial Awareness section will be comprised of  50  -50 Questions each.

    4. Sectional Time Allocated to Reasoning is Increased to 45 Minutes


    As there are changes in the number of questions in Quantitative aptitude section and general awareness section,  section time allotted is also change. This change is seen in the reasoning section due to its clubbing with computer knowledge.
